Description
Medroxyprogesterone is also prescribed for the treatment of endometriosis. In endometriosis, endometrial glands and uterine stroma are seen outside the endometrium and uterus, especially in the pelvis and abdomen. The cells of this tissue need estrogen (another female sex hormone) to grow and survive. Medroxyprogesterone reduces the effect of estrogen on these cells, thereby shrinking endometriosis. It is also prescribed in higher doses to treat some cancers, such as endometrial cancer.
It is also available as a medroxyprogesterone injection and is used to prevent pregnancy. You can read about it on the relevant page.
